The film-makers are more deft in dramatising these little-known details that never made the headlines, and the tears of genuine sensitivity they elicit may wash away _ or cover up _ the shortcomings in bringing this real-life human struggle to the screen.

The Lady doesn't do justice to the amazing life and democratic crusade of Aung San Suu Kyi despite excellent performances by David Thewlis and Michelle Yeoh.

Luc Besson's sterile, unfussy direction and a pat script severely compromise what is nevertheless a career-best performance from Michelle Yeoh.

Besson has surely struck cinematic gold? Disappointingly not, even if charismatic actress Michelle Yeoh is present to help translate Daw Suu's remarkable political and personal journey.

Besson hits familiar biopic beats, but the formula could have used something a little more daring to liven things up.

"I don't like this cult of personality," Suu Kyi tells her husband on the patio. The Lady, on the other hand, is all for it.

The screen version falls afoul of a laggardly pace, an earnest tone and a surfeit of domesticity.

It doesn't rouse the spirit. It barely breathes.

Well-meaning biopic will barely satisfy people's curiosity about a little-seen woman. Played up as more tragic personal sacrifice than politics, she remains a noble symbol.

As far as biopics stand Besson has spared no expense in creating as authentic and presentable a movie as he could with The Lady. Yet he has failed to tap into that sense of outrage, sadness and hope that a story like this should conjure.

Besson does draw the best out of his two leads but The Lady is a film about an extraordinary woman. So why is it such an ordinary film?

A kind of Botoxed biopic with an unlikely director - Luc Besson - manning the syringe.

"The Lady" presents a stately, rather dull portrayal of a loving marriage stymied by the whims of political necessity and fascist generals.
