Margaret M @RT17534051 May 23 "The Last" is a highly intelligent, engaging mystery thriller that caught my attention immediately with its' captivating premise, and skilled acting, writing, and direction; remarkable all the more for it's shoe-string indie budget. The scenes of a vacant Sydney are extraordinary in their execution. Initially, I mistook "The Last" for a post-apocalyptic, last-survivor film, which it isn't. Nor is it in any way a depressing or anxiety producing story. "The Last" moves along at a fast clip, told from the point of view of William, a thoughtful, moral, unpretentious man, befuddled but not defeated by his situation. It's impossible for the audience not to bond with and root for him. I'm usually good at solving mysteries and predicting a film ending long before it appears, but not this one. Don't let anyone tell you anything in advance of watching this well done indie project. This is a film that proves real talent is much more important than a large budget.
