The Laundromat

Critics Consensus

The Laundromat misuses its incredible cast by taking a disappointingly blunt and unfocused approach to dramatizing the real-life events that inspired it.

Movie Info

When her idyllic vacation takes an unthinkable turn, Ellen Martin (Academy Award winner Meryl Streep) begins investigating a fake insurance policy, only to find herself down a rabbit hole of questionable dealings that can be linked to a Panama City law firm and its vested interest in helping the world's wealthiest citizens amass even larger fortunes. The charming -- and very well-dressed -- founding partners Jürgen Mossack (Academy Award winner Gary Oldman) and Ramón Fonseca (Golden Globe nominee Antonio Banderas) are experts in the seductive ways shell companies and offshore accounts help the rich and powerful prosper. They are about to show us that Ellen's predicament only hints at the tax evasion, bribery and other illicit absurdities that the super wealthy indulge in to support the world's corrupt financial system.

  • An intriguingly interpretive if scattershot and tonally uneven attempt to deconstruct the financial and legal arcana contained in the massive data-dump known as the Panama Papers.

  • Does it work? Enough for an evening's diversion... but not enough to get you good and mad, the way you should and the filmmakers intend.

  • Other filmmakers might have approached the material with more heat and passion. Soderbergh opts for an arm's-length style, using this as an opportunity to educate as much as entertain.

  • Steven Soderbergh's social satire mashes up multiple stories of various tones, but they never become a cohesive package.

    Oct 4, 2019 | Rating: 2/4 | Full Review…
  • Soderbergh and Burns remain exceptionally well-matched collaborators. They're after just enough human interest to make us care, and just enough socioeconomic outrage to make us seethe - some of us, anyway.

  • If a motley crew of movie stars is what it takes to shine more light on government malfeasance, then let Meryl carry that torch in a wig and a bucket hat.
