Audience Reviews for The Liar (Valehtelija)
Wow! This Finnish flick is sheer brilliance (to me anyway) but to an extent, it is actually pretty damned melancholic. We're dealing with the young, slightly pessimistic Ville Alfa, an intellectual, who doesn't work, "The necessity to eat does not justify prostituting the acts [to work]'' as he says so magnificently that I must have to agree. Ville tends to fall in love with a woman at first glance, he's all a scheme, a cheap one at it too, scamming his way through life by borrowing money, stealing, all that good stuff. He is full of creative excuses to get himself out any situation. A seemingly arrogant fellow, but nonetheless, a realist. ..Or is he a dreamer? Aki Kaurismäki was well suited for the role, I think. I thought this film was really a treat. It made Finland seem like the ever so hopeless romantic - that of Paris, France. Great settings, nice cafes, architecture, you name it. The great thing is, the added taste from 1981. Mika Kaurismäki portrays the story well, and I think he made it have quite an interesting viewpoint. It was just really mellow and I thought this element to the film in general, was simply great! Despite its short length, I thought this film was well done, and it surely kept my interest. Just the fact that Ville was so peculiar and apathetic made things entertaining. The dialogue made me laugh a few times as well. I suppose this movie was pretty damned good. I really enjoyed this one!
