The film ... is too scattershot in its approach to have much impact.

You'll leave your scepticism at the door if you're going to have a good time here.

Miller's riveting, heartfelt portrayal etches a delicate picture underneath the colorful, wild portrait of Fawcett - of the losses suffered at home in service of greater ambitions and fantastical dreams.

Although The Lost City of Z held my interest, it felt like a missed opportunity. Like too many biographical movies, this one tries to do too much.

There is an unexploitative, unsensational grounding to the whole affair that lends it dignity, but that doesn't quite justify the 140-minute runtime.

The never-ending jungle proves perfectly suited to the filmmaker's lush, operatic aesthetic, as does the film's central theme of escaping one's background, through whatever means necessary.

Never cloying, never sentimental, yet grandly, heartbreakingly, full of hope.

An ambitious miss.

The film is rich with this passionate intensity, which is exactly what a man needs to put together a big film in his late forties while the clock is ticking.

The Lost City of Z has the form of a classical epic without the problematic approach towards other cultures. All of which makes The Lost City of Z a special film.

It's always a pleasure to watch one of [Gray's] films, because the compositions are always so on-point, the technique so crisp and luminescent, and the storytelling packed with emotional beats and refined characterisation.

With Hunnam's strong performance and the thoughtful script, we're not seeing something no one has seen before, but it's a mostly worthy trek all the same.
