In this 2005 miniseries adapted from novelist Mikhail Bulgakov's satire of Soviet life under despot Joseph Stalin, three distinct story threads about religion, history and politics converge. In the first, the devil turns up in 1930s Moscow; in the second, Matthew the Evangelist attempts to discover the truth about the Crucifixion; and in the third, a muse barters with the devil to be reunited with a writer locked away in an insane asylum.
