It's tough for me to give this film a fair shake when I can't help but be reminded of better work elsewhere.

I's an absorbing, contemplative, beautifully-directed piece that asks its audience to stick with it as it builds towards a climax that's both hugely emotional and surprisingly uplifting.

The Midnight Sky shines with Clooney's deep and abiding belief in the human condition, in compassion, in ... "redemption" is the wrong word, too Catholic. Rather, in connection, even if it is brief, even if it is seemingly one-sided.

The seasoned actor uses his age well, portraying a deeply regretful and broken man who grasps at the chance to do anything to make up for his past mistakes.

The amalgamation of science fiction and whimsical fantasy elements in this story reminds me of some of Ray Bradbury's work (The Martian Chronicles) but the combination of elements doesn't quite hold together as well as Bradbury's stories do.

A climactic conversation between Clooney and Felicity Jones... may not be enough to salvage this stale slog of a movie, but it gives us a reason to root for Clooney to succeed the next time he sits in the director's chair.

A heavily bearded [George] Clooney is pitch-perfect as the man the audience must relate to because he will be their experienced guide on the journey they are watching.

The two-hour running time seems like two years as it drags on indefinitely.
January 3, 2021
A movie that feels like it's on pause for nearly all of its 118 minutes.

As a filmmaker, George Clooney still has some things to learn about pacing, shifting tempos, and editing.
January 1, 2021
Solemn, serious and conspicuously dull, George Clooney's apocalyptic sci-fi film...proves tough sledding for its viewers as well as its characters.

Impressive as the film's design and VFX are - hold tight for some tense sequences reminiscent of Gravity - Clooney stresses the importance of human connection.

George Clooney's latest is a somber apocalyptic drama punctuated by brief action beats.

Isn't quite great, but does offer some compelling ideas about space, humanity, and apocalypse

[The] familiarity of story and style has the feeling of leftovers as lifeless as the continual hangdog expression on Clooney's face rather than of dynamic reinvention.

The cinematography by Martin Ruhe is very good and brings the audience into the coldness and aloneness of this devastation.
