The best movie good vs evil I ever saw.A masterpiece! The photography is exquisite characterizing the gothic novel by an atmosphere of mystery and horror and having a pseudomedieval setting.Excellent cast!

A little slow, and quite without a climax. Disappointing, by French cinema standards. The comparison to something like The Woman In White, in which there are scares-a-plenty, would be misleading. This film never really gets started.

Don't believe the stuff about it being a horror because it isn't. There's a bit with a ghost in it, and that's about it. But as a drama this is a compelling and gripping piece of film making.

Rated as a horror, but definitely not! A very good storey, gripping, but a lot of things just left sort of hanging with no explanation as to the reason for them being there in the first place.

Well acted, nice cinematography, dramatic (and appropriate) soundtrack, but just lacking that extra bit for 5 stars.

It's alright, but I don't see the point.

A little slow and a lot predictable but Cassel is watchable as always.

Intense and compelling story about the temptation and inner struggles of an 18th century monk. Some visuals I will never forget, it's so powerful. Dark and a bit strange story, but kept thinking about it long after leaving the cinema. "Satan has only the power we give him." is the key quote!

I would recommend this film. It deals with the sexual repression which has been at the core of the Catholic church since celibacy was invented. The film is based on a novel from 1795, so it uses the the religious terminology of "the devil" and "possession", etc, to refer to sexual desire, but it conveys a strong critique of the psychological deformity which lies behind celibacy and the sterile lives of nuns and monks. We see the central character of the monk as an essentially good man whose life is being poisoned by sexual frustration. The ending of the film is disappointing - everything is blamed on the devil - but the searching gaze that has been turned on the sexual hang-ups of the Church has accomplished its mission by then anyway.

Best movie I have seen this year. Never once checked my watch and i was gripped the whole way through. Would have recommended this for a second viewing only the end is just a bit too obvious.

Not nearly as dark and gothic as it could have been - disappointing

Taken from IMDB "Madrid, in the seventeenth century. Abandoned at the doorstep of a monastery, Ambrosio has been brought up by the Capucin Friars. After becoming a friar himself, he becomes an unrivaled preacher whose sermons draw crowds and earn him the admiration of all. Admired for his extreme rigor and absolute virtue, Ambrosio is certain he is safe from any temptation. But Satan has not said his final word." ....Well the movie is long and tedious

Lousy shortened adaptation of the excellent gothic novel by Matthew Gregory Lewis. Everything is flat here: the acting, the rythm, the directing etc. Spare your time and read the novel instead !
