The Neon Demon is a beautiful film, but it is so much more.

While we all know modeling and high fashion are hard industries with lots of backstabbing and manipulation, Refn's take is more surreal and unnerving.

The Neon Demon offers, without a doubt, incomparable style and substance.

The cinematography is so seductive, so sensual, that when paired with Cliff Martinez's pulsating score, The Neon Demon becomes something impulsively alluring even if it leaves one feeling rather icky.

There's something pernicious in a world that places such a high premium on how a woman looks, but little of that feels explored. It's all a surface reading at best, but that's to be expected from a film so concerned with getting skin deep.

The Neon Demon swerves wildly between visionary genius and laughably trashy "shock" cinema - it deserves both one and five stars, so we've split the difference. You'll either love or loathe it.

THE NEON DEMON will be remembered as a great experiment gone somewhat askew. Rather than adopt cheap clichés and formula, Refn embraces complex themes to tell an astounding original story.

... brilliant both visually and in its hilarious skewering of a problematic industry I've never been able to understand or embrace.

The Neon Demon is a genuinely mesmerising combination of image and sound. It's a flashy film where you can't take your eyes off the screen in case of risking missing some perfectly composed and original shot.

They're saying something with this film...I loved The Neon Demon, but you have to know what you're getting into. This is the type of movie that will probably shock you.

The Neon Demon is most likely Nicolas Winding Refn's version of a comedy. Whether this is a good or bad thing will be up to each... viewer. What is indisputable is that Refn is a director of singular vision, strong opinion, and boundless confidence.

The end result isn't a rallying feminist cry so much as it is an intoxicatingly stylish slap across the face of good taste and moral decency.
October 31, 2018
The script, written by Refn, Mary Laws and Polly Stenham, may not hold up when put under scrutiny, but at least what's on screen is pretty.
August 29, 2018
A hilarious Grand Guignol satire of the fashion industry.
August 28, 2018
The Neon Demon is just as derivative as Drive, but it treats its influences in a more diffuse manner.
August 23, 2018
The Neon Demon,.. isn't interested in sympathy. It's a vibrant, problematic and narcissistic howl at the moon, just as vapid and hollow as the industry it's trying to deconstruct.

Though Jena Malone steals every scene she is in, Fanning perfectly plays the part of the innocent ingénue who may or may not be playing everyone around her like a fiddle.

Nicolas Winding Refn manages to capture in his characters that unique feeling of emptiness within chaos, which made "Drive" and "Only God Forgives" memorable, for better or for worse.
December 5, 2017
The trance-like atmosphere, catchy thumping techno score from frequent Refn collaborator Cliff Martinez, and bizarre visual imagery will assuredly keep viewers wide-eyed and on their toes

If you're not getting the picture, Demon is a graphic film. Refn goes for some deeply upsetting beats and lands everyone one of them, but Demon is also surprisingly funny.
