This film uses the mediocre to feed the most insipid symbolic devices of the psychological horror genre. [Full review in Spanish]

Even in moments when we're supposed to be scared or thrilled, particularly in the tacky third act, you laugh at the absurdity.

It's an examination of superficiality, although one without a desired layer of actual subtext, attempting to terrorize with instances of Grand Guignol, which often feels adolescent when such shock values fail to seem perverse.

Neon Demon is a film that is visually stunning, but it is lacking in substance, much like the models the film focuses on.

It piles on the vapidity because it wants us to know how vapid the world of modeling is, and it's so blasé about it that it's neither fun nor interesting.

The bland objectification of the modelling business, the self-loathing, self-mutilation, and desperation of the lovely young models, are cuttingly satirised, but in a way that not only normalises their attitude, but seems to revel in it.

When the script is not being stunningly predictable it is plain old unconvincing, with twists that will make your head spin.

Though stylistically and visually beautiful, "The Neon Demon" is immensely slow paced and is full of intense and on-the-nose symbolism that doesn't strike a real chord.

You'll find lots of blood and fashion here, but no characters who are even remotely likable or relatable... I can't imagine how this film ever got funded.

My goodness, this is tired and trite old stuff, a dreary exploration of the world of the fashion model.

It feels a bit like Black Swan, with relationships between beautiful women conveying envy and lust and violence all at once, but it's less effective because each character is astonishingly boring and unlikable.

The Neon Demon provides plenty of eye candy, but not much food for thought. As a send-up of the vapid fashion industry, it's got nothing on Zoolander.

The photograph is stunning. But the story is a hot mess.

The Neon Demon cheapens fashion and femininity.

Pushing aside the earlier predatory male character in favor of a "women eat each other alive, but literally" story makes it fall short for me.

Just as people clicking on your profile or liking your Insta means you have done something "good", people hissing at your film now affords you a weird kind of success. Only The Neon Demon isn't good, and most Instagram pictures are rubbish.

[It's] a blood-soaked, macabre and initially fascinating film. One where style made sure substance never got the invite to attend, then takes over the whole mad -- and maddeningly slow -- shebang.

Although Refn is indeed a deeply unique filmmaker on an aesthetic level, in terms of character, theme and genre he is deeply derivative.

That everything is intended in bad taste is one thing; that it's all finally more bland than bitter is another.
