The Pale Door Reviews

There are some good effects and fans of body horror may be pleased by the inventive deaths, but in the end The Pale Door feels like a wasted premise.

It's an inert, dreadfully dull mess that tries for some From Dusk Till Dawn-style "you thought it was this kind of movie, but it's really this kind of movie" shenanigans, and falls flat.

Although The Pale Door stumbles a good bit it does offer a horrific look at misogyny, patriarchy, and the enduring Puritanism of America.

Call it the horror virus, one that is afflicting more and more films: overkill overshadows restraint.
August 27, 2020
With a promising title taken from Edgar Allan Poe's poem The Haunted Palace, the movie The Pale Door immediately squanders that promise.

C'mon Mickey let's put on a show. You can be an outlaw and Judy can be a witch. We can just use some falling down sets and it will all be fun. No, it isn't.

Not as weird or fun as it sounds, the deliberately paced film dabbles in atmospheric eccentricities before settling for a conventionally gory payoff.

One Dalton gang member perfectly sums up my reaction to this inane, inept horror/Western: "I've had enough of this strange shit."

Koontz's command over the material is so absent that it is at times hard to distinguish his film from a spoofy Western-themed fair where a group of friends play dress-up for amusement.

A horror movie with a silly premise that's not even well executed.

Disappointingly dull.
August 20, 2020
Prefaced by an Edgar Allan Poe quote that gives the film its title and proves the scariest thing about it, The Pale Door represents yet another stylistic mash-up that ends up less than the sum of its parts.

Koontz can't find a way to balance the tonality of the endeavor, ultimately coming up short with most of his ideas.
August 19, 2020
A movie that needed to be better from the jump, and also get to some of the more exciting and gory stuff faster.
August 17, 2020
Works best when it's a high-energy mashup, which unfortunately happens too infrequently.

Between the uneven pacing of the plot and the regressive presentation of witches, The Pale Door is a difficult film to champion. It is actively fighting against the elements which it should embrace, and the audience is who gets lost in that tussle.

...the title is from an Edgar Allen Poe poem quoted at the beginning and is the best thing in the movie.

...director Aaron B. Koontz would have had to devise a way to shoot flares out of the screen to engage my interest... The best thing about the film is the Edgar Allan Poe stanza which introduces it, a delusional misrepresentation of what follows.

There's enough good here that 'The Pale Door' doesn't feel like a waste of time, but it isn't a strong enough derivation from its inspiration where you'd ever want to watch this instead.
