Movie Info

Filmmakers Brian M. Cassidy and Melanie Shatzky offer an offbeat look at the lives of the elderly in this documentary. In The Patron Saints, Cassidy and Shatzky spent several months filming the residents of a home for senior citizens, with one of the patients, James, serving as both guide and narrator; however, the people living there are an often eccentric bunch, and the film doesn't shy away from their quirks and tall tales of their pasts. At the same time, The Patron Saints also focuses on the difficult work of caring for people whose minds and bodies are failing them, with a blunt but sympathetic portrayal of the patients (as well as their sometimes troubled relationships with their relatives), and the staff who struggle with the challenging demands of their job. The Patron Saints was an official selection at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.

An unflinching look at the inevitable tragedy that is senescence.
