Movie Info

Rossport is a small town on the Western Coast of Ireland, where most men earn their living through fishing and people have a fiercely independent streak. The people of Rossport found themselves up against a powerful adversary when large reserves of natural gas were discovered nearby; Shell Petroleum obtained a lease on the gas and planned to build a high-pressure pipeline through Rossport to move it to their refineries. However, many of Rossport's citizens were strongly opposed to Shell's plans, and when the Irish government failed to stand up for the rights of their constituents, the locals began taking matters into their own hands. Filmmaker Risteard O Domhnaill was on hand to record the ongoing battle between Shell and the people of Rossport, and The Pipe is a documentary which concerns the oil company's efforts to build their pipeline, and the determination of the people of Rossport to stop it, including crab fisherman Pat O'Donnell, who puts his tiny ship in the way of Shell's massive vessels, and a quintet of local activists who become known in the press as "The Rossport Five." The Pipe was an official selection at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The Pipe is not only a brilliantly edited and engagingly character-driven narrative, but a disturbing and timely depiction of the failings of our justice system.
