The Private Affairs of Bel Ami Reviews

The plot kept me watching to see what would happen next, but there was something missing in the performances. Usually actors need more subtlety, but in this film, when the characters expressed love or hate for one another, I didn't feel it. Angela Landsbury had a few moments that touched me, but for a movie supposedly involving passion among French people (for heaven's sake), there was too much reserve all around. Not suggesting Hollywood histrionics would be preferable, but... something. The song he whistles all the way through, and that they hear soldiers sing while visiting his ill friend, was "Auprès de ma blonde" which is hundreds of years old. Almost 20 years later it was used in an Elvis film with new English lyrics: I love only one girl/ One I got my arms around/ I love only one girl / One in every town.

George Sanders plays his role as a 'cad' superbly and he's well cast given the character is sophisticated, well turned out and well spoken to enable him to integrate into high scoity

George Sanders ,Angela Lansbury ,Frances Dee ,ruthless man who uses women to rise in Parisian society. It was based on the Guy de Maupassant novel Bel Ami. The film had a 1946 premiere in Paris, This is a lavish film classic that is enjoyable and entertaining, Susan Douglas Rubes makes her film debut

Watching it right now. It's a bit harsher then Dangerous Liaisons which this story reminds me of, now sure which book was written first but it's the same idea. This one has a bit more ruthlessness and more people get hurt.

Sort of an interesting story, and sort of not, it's hard to say if this movie was good or bad, so I'll say it's just okay.
