The Rewrite

Critics Consensus

The Rewrite's unremarkable plot is enlivened considerably by its likable cast, adding up to a comedy that coasts capably on the charms of Hugh Grant and his co-stars.

Movie Info

Once upon a time, Keith Michaels (Hugh Grant - About a Boy, Love Actually) was an Award-winning Hollywood screenwriter, but divorce and a string of unsuccessful films have left him with nothing but bad debts and blank pages. So when his agent arranges a job as guest screenwriting professor at a remote university in upstate New York, a desperate Keith can't say no. Initially hoping to give minimal effort to actual teaching so he can focus on his next script, Keith unexpectedly finds himself becoming invested in his students lives, including Holly (Marisa Tomei, The Wrestler), a single mom looking to start her own new chapter. The Rewrite features an all-star cast, including J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), Allison Janney ("Mom"), Chris Elliott (Groundhog Day) and Bella Heathcote (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies). great movie, reminded me a lot of wonder boys. not a perfect film but the characters are well developed and the story is genuine.

Watched The Rewrite tonight and I loved it! But then, I am a sucker for well-done romantic comedies and this qualifies. I am also quite familiar with the Binghamton area as I grew up an hour and a half north of there and have passed through it numerous times. I am unashamedly a fan of Hugh Grant and thought he was excellent as the cynical, burned out Hollywood screenwriter still basking in the adulation for his one and only successful screen play who takes a teaching job as a last ditch means of earning a living. The supporting cast was excellent, the screenplay was brilliant, and the story of second chances and finding a purpose was actually inspiring. I am sore tempted to go the full Monty on this and give it five stars.

After the nosedive Hugh Grant's career took of late I was expecting this to be terrible. Instead it was engaging, well written, well acted and had some great actors in it. Similar to the screenwriting techniques Hugh Grant's character delivers onscreen to his students. If anything the third act that the movie so goes on about is arguably this movies weakest part in an otherwise well told narrative.
