A gorgeous, poetic and delicate film that knows that little can be said and yet all can be conveyed with beautiful images and a wonderfully subtle approach to a character's life, and it is almost impossible to not feel enormously enchanted by the beauty and serenity of what we witness.

Not much to say about this film as I certainly enjoyed it. This is a visually poetic film. It simply relies on its visual and symbolism to tell its story and it is a sweet and gentle one at that. There's something Cinderella-esque about the film and seeing how Mui sort of grows up and transforms into much more than a "servant". So in that regard it is a solidly told story even if the dialogue is very minimalist. With that said, the film can sort of be a chore to sit through at times. Symbolism and beautiful visuals can only get you so far, but I still enjoyed the film, it's not perfect by any means but it is solid film nonetheless.

A superb film. A beautifully rendered treat for the eyes and the senses.

This film is exactly why I don't like independent films. The director focuses more on the so-called "aesthetic" details of the film and they consume all aspects of it. He stuffed SO MUCH SYMBOLISM about how pure Mui was he practically beat us over the head with it. The characters are flat and ugly and speak maybe 1/8 of the time. I hated the music - it was SO repetitive and I was really glad when the dad ran away so I wouldn't have to listen to him strum on his stupid qin again. I'm being nice by giving it two stars because I liked the one scene where Mui cracks open the papaya and touches the seeds. Otherwise, blegh.
