What was interesting and really refreshing about this movie was how grown up it was. And I mean that seriously. The movie is about sex, but it wasn't melodramatic and it wasn't a raunchy comedy. It was honest and frank. It was real. So nice job by writer and director Ben Lewin for keeping the story really grounded. The acting didn't hurt either. John Hawkes and Helen Hunt are great together. I loved their scenes together. Also, Hawkes physical work was fantastic as Mark, the main character who is in an iron lung. William H. Macy is fun as the priest who actually helps him, and Moon Bloodgood (that's a name huh) is great as Mark's attendant. There's not really a whole lot to say about it. It's a simple, honest, and not flashy, which worked wonderfully in its favor.

I respect a film that handles such taboo topics with the utmost sincerity, but the drama running through it is less than engrossing.

Didn't know anything about this movie but saw and wow.

The Sessions is a story about a man with a disability. He contracts Polio from a young age and is bedridden because of this and the movie tells us the touching story about his journey in life.
If you read the blurb about the movie or watch the trailer you will only see the main story that Mark wanted to have sex with a women.
This movie goes in more depth than just having sex with a women.
The movie explores physical and emotional intimacy that a person with a disability has and goes through.
The movie also shows a friendship and relationship between Mark his carers his Priest and his Sex Surrogate.
The movie really tells and shows the real ement of the emotional intimacy that is created between 2 people regardless of the relationship may having started to being one thing and it leads to much much more.
John Hawkes & Helen Hunt put in Oscar winning performances.
This movie is not an easy movie to watch even for me that has a disability and can relate not completely but to some degree.
This movie is not for everyone and should be watched with an open heart and mind.
The journey Mark takes in his real life may have been seen from you and I as miniscule however for Mark this was a massive magnificent triumph.
Give the movie a shot you will be amazed but if you feel its too much for you stay away.
The movie deals with a very hard and in depth adult theme and should not be seen by anyone below 18 from my call but the movie states 15 and above.
The movie has great heart and soul. One of the best movies I have seen in a long time.

Touching film. Believable characters. Kept my interest the entire time. Found it to be more of a drama...not so much a comedy. Could be watched alone or with a few people.

Frankness about sex actually relieves discomfort rather than adding to it.

Really good movie, I laughed and I cried. Everyone deserves love and this movie is a great portrait of that. On a side note I think I have seen Helen Hunt naked in most movies she has done. Great Movie.

Mark O'Brien: "I believe in a God with a sense of humor. I would find it absolutely intolerable not to be to able blame someone for all this."

Sweet and funny, "The Sessions" is so much better than you would hope it to be. John Hawkes and Helen Hunt phenomenal.

Sensitive and beautiful film about a man who is paralyzed from polio and his quest to find fulfillment in sex and intimate love, and the woman who helps him achieve it. Wonderful acting by Helen Hunt, John Hawkes, William H. Macey and Adam Arkin.

Great character-driven movie. The doc is decidedly better, not as developed, but real. This biopic does a good job of bringing it to full length.

Helen Hunt was nominated for an Oscar but it is John Hawkes who steals the show with his astounding performance as the poet Mark O'Brien who spends his nights in an iron lung and his days on a gurney.

A story which is different from normal. A story which will make you laugh and cry at the same time. Watch it for its sheer innocence.

A really well written discussion on sexual intimacy and losing one's virginity, unlike those typical teens-doing-it-for-the-first-time films. Also like films based on true stories.

interesting, touching and totally new but still can't understand how Helen Hunt accepted to be naked during the whole movie and the leading actor john hawkes is brilliant, the movie is smooth and makes you emotional and thankful to what you have

The fact that I actually remember this sort of outweighs my dislike-for-no-discernible-reason of Helen Hunt and the fact that while watching this, I was visually accosted by her complete and total nakedness. By the way, this was basically porn, but apparently the fact that her husband KNEW she had sex with handicapped people (I figure because they're the only ones who couldn't outrun her...{I'm mostly kidding}...I'm not THAT mean!) makes it OK. As long as they didn't call her at home. ANYWAY, the story's REALLY about a severely handicapped young man (Hawkes) and his various struggles, from finding a good new nurse (Bloodgood), to getting accustomed to the new leader at church (Macy), to grappling with his desire and inability to have sex "normally", and feelings towards the woman to whom he finally lost his virginity. (Hunt)
