So you reach the half of the movie and think that this nice film about the bigger picture of crime and society is wrapped up, and you wonder what else is left to show. The answer, as it turns out, is an amazingly humane story. Expect watery eyes.

Robert Guediguian loves Marseilles and most of all the ugliest parts. It's a Marseilles without heavy gangsters and without heavy tourists, just real heavy people. Like the middle-aged union leader Michel, who loses his job. And is robbed. By a co-worker.

And he finds that there are different kinds of solidarity and different kinds of class struggle. The unions have compromised in a way, which brings newly hired workers into misery. The robber is facing years in prison, so what is real solidarity? You have your right as a victim of crime, but there are also sacrifices here. Can you repair it? The robber has two younger brothers. By standing up for your rights, they become victims too. It's not easy to solve this for a person like former union leader Michel.

There is a solution here and we can of course discuss what's the right thing to do in a script. Leaving questions unanswered or not? In this case, it's a little too easy.

A sincere happiness from tolerance and optimism may not be easy, but it does exist !!
Apart facing the exhausting reality, try to discover some little sweets to pet our own lives.

Il più bel film che ho visto sinora alla rassegna di Cannes: tocca moltissime corde e non sbaglia un colpo.
