Oliveira's first use of 21st-century digital technology paradoxically marks a return to the origins of cinema with the special effects trembling with a handcrafted sincerity and shimmering sense of wonder

This whimsical, ethereal tale of love and death is as light as a feather, but charming in its own way.

An old-fashioned 21st Century movie.

Some dreamlike photography and a soothing musical score are pluses but slow, draggy telling is likely to frustrate the viewer.

The Strange Case of Angelica is indeed strange and unsettling. What it isn't is compelling or satisfying.

An uneven but intriguing piece of whimsy that veers from powerfully symbolic cinematography into self parody.

A quiet tale, told through a rarely moving camera and a playful, bewitching smile.

The narrative unreels with the simplicity of a silent movie; many scenes are shot from a single camera set-up with few cuts, the shadowy, stagy interiors backed by Chopin, as if it were a live piano accompaniment.

...a whimsical fable, the meditation of a very old man looking to the past, looking towards death. It has the impact of a half smile.

Because of his age and experience, de Oliveira brings a wider perspective to everything he shoots; if he places his camera in the middle of a street, he tries to convey the way it was decades ago, not just how it is now.

More mundane than magical, The Strange Case of Angelica is neither strange nor lively enough to lift anyone's spirits.

de Oliveira's film is a musical of a sort, its quietude occasionally lifted by work songs or chorales.

While it is evidently the work of an artist with great stores of wisdom and a long view of history, it also has a playful, wry quality that can only be described as youthful.

A distinctive, touchingly old-fashioned piece of work, and unmistakably one made by a director whose life has spanned eras.

The mystical when not earthy, Chaplinesque images are enchanting. In particular the artist's pursuit of his elusive muse, ecstatically locked in a wordless embrace with the beaming apparition as she takes him on a journey floating across the night sky.

We think we're in for a weighty, Hitchcockian treatise on artistic obsession; Oliveira's intentions are a bit more impish, however, though no less profound.
