Audience Reviews for The Sugar Wars: The Life Story of Angelo Lonardo

½

I saw this documentary at the 2013 Cleveland International Film Fest. It was in a double feature about Cleveland history with A Fighting Heart. Like Drive-in Movie Memories that I saw the previous year, this just wasn't constructed very well. It is an interesting topic. The recreations of historical events and the taped interviews with Angelo himself are worth seeing for the most part. However, the narrative treats the audience as if they are stupid by repeating too much stuff. The talking heads could have been more streamlined. Some of the interviewees seemed to have a better grasp on the relevant history and were better at expressing themselves in front of the camera. Others may have been fine as research sources, but the filmmakers were perhaps too democratic in giving everyone equal time to speak, when it was unnecessary to be so repetitive or allow certain authors of Cleveland crime books to drone on and on with opinions rather than facts.
