April 3, 2019
It's not the worst film in the world, but it is painfully mediocre.
October 24, 2017
If the film's explosive opening is simply a case of poor timing, its last half-hour is just poor movie-making, with a twist that comes as little surprise and a final bit of storyline that doesn't remotely convince.

"The Take" is just your run-of-the-mill Euro-thriller that putt-putts along like a weary TV cop show.
January 19, 2017
This thriller begins with a strong, relevant idea -- using a fake terrorist attack to mask another crime -- but the poor storytelling soon demotes it to a forgettable throwaway.
January 2, 2017
The ever-watchable Idris Elba and a handful of muscular action sequences are scuppered by a flaky-pastry plot which badly misjudges subject matter warranting more considered exploration.
December 18, 2016
It doesn't have any pretensions at all, unless you count the mostly English cast, who resiliently pretend the film is an American action movie, with an American budget, for a whole 92 minutes.
December 15, 2016
The Take is one busy, busy action flick. It also does something I never thought could be done: It makes the consistently charismatic Idris Elba look unappealing.
November 18, 2016
The urban Parisian locales form an intriguing backdrop for an otherwise formulaic action thriller.
November 18, 2016
Elba's magnetic physical presence delivers so much without doing much of anything. But his fans deserve so much better than a couple of dumb quips and a little ultra-violence.
November 17, 2016
Idris Elba makes a dynamite action star, but this politically charged thriller doesn't give him the support he needs to become the next Liam Neeson.
November 17, 2016
An initially straightforward story and a few inventive stunt sequences to create needed excitement. However, there's not enough of it, leaving the effort unfortunately underwhelming.
November 17, 2016
Most of The Take's moving parts feel like spinning cogs, devoid of fit or function.
November 17, 2016
A strictly by-the-numbers political thriller that fails to capitalize on Idris Elba's formidable screen presence.
November 17, 2016
A coupla cool scenes, and Idris Ebla sings.
November 17, 2016
Unimaginative, retrograde pulp fit for the bargain bin.
November 16, 2016
Director James Watkins keeps things reasonably interesting, but his characters are not well drawn, which hinders the buddy dynamic between Mason and Briar.
November 14, 2016
For a film so interested in the public's malleability, The Take isn't particularly good at controlling its own audience.
September 23, 2016
Nothing more than a charmless vehicle of entertainment with unfortunate connections to real life. [Full review in Spanish]
August 25, 2016
Bastille Day can seem like a regular film, leaving what's interesting in the background. Turns out surprising, coming from a director like Watkins. [Full review in Spanish]
May 20, 2016
A fast-paced but thin-scripted affair that does little other than re-confirm Idris Elba's action man credentials.
