The film never lingers too heavily, and for all the story contrivances Tsui manages to quite deftly balance his impulses. Moments of tension or fear dissipate into the spectacle, only to reemerge again.

It doesn't matter if said story is preposterous patriotic grandstanding-the film is a work of proud cultural myth-making. See it. And when you do, make sure it's in 3D.
