The Traitor Reviews

February 28, 2020
That's not to say The Traitor doesn't have its moments. There are some fine, if unoriginal executions.

Important Italian Cosa Nostra history rendered in boring, leisurely strokes.

A flawed work that has some moments of genuine inspiration -- just not quite enough of them to make it worth watching.

The Traitor is an exploration of betrayal, according to Bellocchio. He seems to be asking, can a man truly change the course of his life, or is it just a pretense? Unfortunately, this account of Buscetta's story doesn't really give us any answers.

The biggest betrayal of "The Traitor" is its crime against the usually compelling mafia movie genre. This is an offer you can refuse.

I just didn't think it was very involving... [There's] more data than a character arc.

From just a narrative standpoint, it's very tight and quite interesting, but I didn't find myself emotionally drawn to anyone in particular.

The Traitor exclusively portrays men of brute insipidity, only partially digging the dark depths of mafia crime.

If the intent was indictment of toxic masculinity at its worst extreme, Bellocchio had the opportunity to pare back visual metaphors... and invest directly in Maria as a whole person.

While there are flights of sudden violence, some that discover the twisted psychology of many of the Mafiosos, we learn too much of Buscetta that really only tells us little about him.

There's just no real perspective on Buscetta, which separates this brisk but uninvolving history lesson from the truly great mob movies.

By the time "The Traitor" finds its way back to Buscetta for an overextended final stretch that trafficks in all of the usual symbology of paranoia, he's become both too complicated for us to understand and too simple for us to care about.

It's clearly made by a master filmmaker questioning the nature of repentance, and as such is far from superficial; and yet while it never loses our attention, it also doesn't deliver much of a punch.
