The Trip to Spain

Critics Consensus

The Trip to Spain offers more of the same scenery, food, and conversation that filled Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon's first two Trips -- which is to say, more of a good thing.

Movie Info

After jaunts through northern England and Italy, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon embark on another deliciously deadpan culinary road trip. This time around, the guys head to Spain to sample the best of the country's gastronomic offerings in between rounds of their hilariously off-the-cuff banter. Over plates of pintxos and paella, the pair exchange barbs and their patented celebrity impressions, as well as more serious reflections on what it means to settle into middle age. As always, the locales are breathtaking, the cuisine to die for, and the humor delightfully devilish.

  • Under the direction of Michael Winterbottom and the exquisite cinematography of James Clarke, a sense of place is not something The Trip lacks. It is just as impressive, however, that this mixture of inspired improvisation and deliberate writing.

  • Coogan and Brydon ... begin to grate, and come off as obnoxious, both to themselves and to the patrons around them, who hopefully got comped for their meals.

  • That's the pleasure of the uneven but enjoyable "Trip" movies, of which this is the third installment: For better or worse, it's almost like being at that table.

  • It may fail as a movie, but it works as a lovely jaunt with witty companions who delight in the pleasures that arise from their long association.

  • The mercurial nature of fame acts as an ideal metaphor for the fleeting and uncertain nature of life itself - all of which, in the masterful hands of Brydon, Coogan and Winterbottom, goes down more smoothly than a glass of Rioja.

  • The film is, like its predecessors, funny. But the joke is starting to wear just a bit thin.

Audience Reviews for The Trip to Spain

The Coogan and Brydon update of the Hope and Crosby "road buddy films" have been for the most part entertaining but guys it time to hang it up after this last attempt. The scenery and food remained top-notch however the endless impressions one-up-man-ship has grown stale and tiresome. Bizarre ending didn't help either. (9-21-17)
