What to Know

Critics Consensus

Masterfully using negative space and unsettling audio to build its creeping dread, undertone erupts as a diabolically immersive aural nightmare.

Audience Says

Despite an original premise and an effective unsettling atmosphere undertone delivers a somewhat muted horror experience that may appeal to fans of slow-burn, moody fare.

Minimalism and maximalism can’t coexist, at least not here. Instead, “Undertone” is like getting to the climactic moment of your favorite horror podcast, only to have the terrifying impetus interrupted by a Squarespace ad. Go to Full Review

As Undertone crescendoed through its final act, I found myself pleading for Evy to thrust off her headphones. But Tuason’s successfully nerve-racking film relentlessly suffocates within its inescapable, eerie soundscape. Go to Full Review

Tuason conducts "Undertone" to a fever pitch, a maelstrom of sound and fury that is spookily effective, if frustratingly nonspecific. Go to Full Review

This unique horror movie relies largely on clever sound design and a limited setting, but it still conjures up a world of sympathetic characters, a strong story, and spine-chilling scares. Go to Full Review

Undertone did affect me and it's a great exercise in horror technique, but it also stumbles in examining its main themes, despite a great performance from Nina Kiri. Go to Full Review

Carina 5h first time seeing a horror movie based around sound design and I was TERRIFIED but in the best way possible. It has been a very very long time since a movie has left me so scared to the point of me wanting to walk out the theatre, so if you’re a huge horror head please go watch this movie you will not be disappointed See more Edan O 6h If I could give this less than half a star I would. It went from a 7/8 out of 10 to a 1. Don’t expect anything from this. Absolute let down. See more Holley 7h Sooooooooo slow. Hard to follow. Wish the man on the podcast was present physically and the ending was AWFUL. It was neither thought provoking or jump scare. Very typical possibly might frighten 10 year old girls at a sleepover or pregnant woman. Waste of $$ See more barry 7h this movie was terrible! A24 should take a break honestly. if i could ask for my money back i would See more Charley 10h Its not wat u see in this film, but wat u hear that makes u question in wat form makes it more terrifying. See more Jillian 15h I really liked the overall theme and how the story was building in the beginning and middle. It felt like it was leading to something deepe and there were a lot of unnerving moments throughout. But by the end, it kind of lost me. It leaned way more into creepy sounds and heavy demonic imagery instead of actually delivering on the story, which was the part I found most interesting. It felt like the director/writer had the potential to do a lot more with it, but leaned more into being kitschy and weird than telling a fully developed story. I was expecting more payoff, especially since it started off so strong, but the ending ended up feeling pretty underwhelming. There wasnt much closure or a clear explanation of what really happened, just a lot of vague hints. Because of that, the main character didnt feel as developed or impactful as they couldve been.
