The Ward might not bode too well for Carpenter's come back, but he did do good things with what he had to work with (clichéd story and script).

Essentially a stitched together patchwork of better films albeit without their sense of horror, intelligence or humour, this is bargain bin fodder that somehow crawled out of the primordial soup long enough to gain a theatrical run.

Another misfire from Carpenter, could this be his third and final strike?

I was caught by surprise at the twist ending, but that was mostly because I didn't think any movie - even one as abysmally written as this one - would be dumb enough to go there.

An aggressively plain spook story that favors jump moments over sustained tension and winds up falling back on a particularly tired twist.

Lacking the slick cinematography and taut tension of the great man's finest work, this awkward outing feels like Shutter Island remade on the cheap by mockbuster house The Asylum.

This is rusty 'Ghost of Mars' John Carpenter, not 'The Thing' John Carpenter -- and certainly not 'Halloween' John Carpenter.

If loud noises that turn out to be nothing are your bag, then you'll love John Carpenter's horror movie "The Ward."

While a disappointment, The Ward is by no means a complete dud.

Carpenter enthusiasts might find solace in his return to the big screen, but ultimately the mass majority of horror fans will be disappointed.

Carpenter's economical but mundane chiller is possessed more by previous ghoul-friend flicks than it is by his better work.

Flaccid conclusion fits the wilted integrity of the overall feature, which plays as though Carpenter was missing one of his batteries, lacking the drive to conjure some incredible beats of suspense.

The kills aren't terribly suspenseful or dramatically staged and they quickly grow repetitive. Worst of all, they're not particularly scary.

We've seen everything here before and in a better film. John Carpenter used to be such a leader, it's hard to watch him follow and so far behind the pace.

The title is marketing 101: how to sell a schlocky, throwback genre picture on the back of the past glories of a director who once dealt solely in amped-up, literate and ballsy entertainment...
