In his 2014 Palme d'Or winner, Ceylan unpacked thorny issues of ethics and morality with a surgeon's steady patience; he employs a similar approach here, only the territory is much less fertile.

It's a beautiful, moving finale but it hardly needed all the digressions en route, which basically amount to Ceylan taking the very long (and often scenic) way round to arrive at the simple conclusion...

Ceylan cares profoundly about literature, which has been clear for a long time... But, like Winter Sleep, his new film makes me wonder how much Ceylan is now motivated by a passion for cinema.

Having to deal constantly with an ample text and subtitling in which every word counts, one can't help wishing, every once in a while, for a chance to rewind and listen again. That, unfortunately, is not an option open to cinema audiences.
