The Wolf of Wall Street

Critics Consensus

Funny, self-referential, and irreverent to a fault, The Wolf of Wall Street finds Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio at their most infectiously dynamic.

Movie Info

In 1987, Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) takes an entry-level job at a Wall Street brokerage firm. By the early 1990s, while still in his 20s, Belfort founds his own firm, Stratton Oakmont. Together with his trusted lieutenant (Jonah Hill) and a merry band of brokers, Belfort makes a huge fortune by defrauding wealthy investors out of millions. However, while Belfort and his cronies partake in a hedonistic brew of sex, drugs and thrills, the SEC and the FBI close in on his empire of excess.

This is "Wall Street" but with Leonardi DiCaprio and Jonah Hill on Quaaludes. It's actually an utterly entertaining and hilarious joy ride.

The Wolf of Wall Street may be an entertaining film based on a true story, but it places too much emphasis on style over substance and fails to become anything more than a compilation of short memoirs from Jordan Belfort's life.

the success of scorsese's wolf of wall street is that it's enjoyable to watch and it shouldnt be. it should simply be a lesson learned about the world of the stock broker because it's not possible to empathise with his character as everything he does it so vile. it's partly due to dicaprio. it's possibly the best acting he's done in anything but it's also to do with the presentation. the self narration, similar to goodfellas and moments where leo talks directly to the camera and you, the audience, are key. lastly it's down to the humour. there's some very awkward but funny, laugh out loud, moments that i'm still thinking about and laughing to myself over long after viewing.

This movie unfortunately is too raunchy to ever be considered for an award, but it is a quality film. Di Caprio and Scorsese combine for one of the most fun financial movies of this decade. There are solid performances from all the main and supporting characters. Many weren't happy with the ending, though it was a very accurate representation of this day and time, and falls in line with typical Scorsese films. Don't watch with family, seriously
