Although the cinematography is beautiful and the film has a lot of potential, it's far too slowly paced and doesn't have enough depth for the heavy material it takes on.

The Yellow Birds doesn't say much of anything outside of the mundane. The trio of young men at its center are compelling enough, but the entire ordeal feels like a mash-up of countless other movies.

Talent on both sides of the camera can't quite pull together this cerebral, introspective examination of the psychological trauma of military combat.
June 25, 2018
The Yellow Birds does make the most of a murky river or a smoldering battleground, but there is little depth behind its reliable imagery.
June 15, 2018
The story's varied elements of urban combat, back-home recovery and mystery ultimately get away from [director Alexandre] Moors.
June 15, 2018
Even [the soure material's] boldest and most searing examinations are somehow distilled into safe, inoffensive and palatable antiwar movie fluff.
June 15, 2018
A rather dispiriting slog of a movie.
June 15, 2018
The familiarity of this story ... certainly doesn't help in combination with Lowery, Porto, and director Alexandre Moors' non-specific approach to the material.
June 14, 2018
Aims to be poetic and insular, but it's not a particularly compelling feature, slogging through the same old sights and sounds without inspiration to be anything more than disappointingly predictable.

You may want for something to hold on to, but Tye Sheridan and Alden Ehrenreich slip through the fingers, both seeming uninterested and restless to move on to other projects.

There've been too many Iraq War films -- good, bad and indifferent -- to waste your time on one that's merely mediocre.
January 25, 2017
It's not only that The Yellow Birds doesn't have anything new to say, but that it's playing movie karaoke with other, better war movies.
January 25, 2017
Moors is a filmmaker with immense talent, as demonstrated in his Sundance film Blue Caprice from a few years back, but the beats don't quite align this time around.
January 24, 2017
The Yellow Birds should have been an exciting, intense war movie, but has instead been turned into Full Metal Jacket for dummies.
January 23, 2017
"The Yellow Birds" ... takes the form of a detective story, albeit one in which the mystery is as drearily protracted as it is ultimately unpersuasive.

The film seems chiefly informed by other movies; the generic combat scenes are staged with the same shaky handheld "urgency" as every other Iraq War picture, while the characters have no psychology beyond the usual innocence-lost arc.
January 23, 2017
"The Yellow Birds" mostly feels like a slightly different version of "American Sniper," not least because of its disregard for any lives lost that don't belong to Americans.
January 22, 2017
The performances go a long way... but as the narrative becomes tedious, what should be an emotional gutpunch of a conclusion ends up falling flat.
January 22, 2017
Oddly surprising how dramatically inert it is.
January 22, 2017
Strong performances can't overcome the drama's familiarity.
