Movie Info

Progressive Jazz maitre Thelonious Monk (1917-1982) is the subject of this feature-length documentary. It is clear throughout the film that Monk never had any intention at any point in his existence of "explaining" his life or his work. He preferred to let his music do his talking for him. Interviews with Monk's friends, family and co-workers shed some light on Monk's personal travails and political difficulties. The film is highlighted by precious clips of Monk in concert, on the road, and boppin' and jammin' during studio sessions.more

We might be moved by Monk's childlike dependency on his wife, baffled by his esoteric humour, honoured simply by his presence, but all we really need now are the records.

The Monk music that courses through the film is extraordinary in its range of feeling.

The musical value of this footage is so powerful that nothing can deface it, despite the best efforts of Zwerin to do so.

I had heard the music before. What the film gave me was an opportunity to see Thelonious Monk creating some of it, and, just as importantly, an opportunity to see how those who knew him loved him.

watching monk play is always a joy and, while it's a shame the film has to delve into suspicions of mental illness associated with his notoriously eccentric behavior, whatever the truth of the matter, it in no way diminishes his brilliance. a giant of american music. watch it here --> http://youtu.be/E4pmPPtKU64 <-- happy b-day mr monk

"Thelonious Monk - Straight, No Chaser" is an interesting and entertaining documentary about the innovative jazz musician, Thelonious Monk, and his music. Much of the footage here is from behind the scenes footage shot from an around the world tour in 1967, along with talking heads and other performance footage.

I was pleased that most of the emphasis was placed on the music, rather than on Monk's personal life. I'm not an expert on jazz, but I realize there was always something about his music that set him apart from most of his contemporaries.
