There is courage and cheekiness here. What there is not is a story, or much insight or even anger; anyone expecting an indictment of Iran will be sorely disappointed.

This film is unique in a dreadful way: what happens on screen would not be particularly interesting without the facts surrounding its making.

Nobody is likely to confuse This Is Not a Film with mainstream entertainment. But it is more fun than the vast majority of multiplex screensavers.

Equally at home with fiction and non-fiction genres and a filmmaker consistently interested in blurring those demarcations, Panahi's latest effort has a deceptively unstructured and spontaneous quality underpinned by a clear intellectual agenda.

It's clear from the first moments that this is a man who can't help but understand his situation in cinematic terms.

This Is Not a Film is a practical joke as much as it is a movie, and while it possesses a deadly serious undercurrent, what's most surprising is how witty the finished product is.

Alternately funny, sad, and infuriating, the film is a shiv smuggled out of a prison and driven deep into our hearts.

In its way, this effort is both a forceful assertion of the most stifling brand of auteurism and a radical reconfiguration of its political potential.

It is not a protest; it is a plea. This is not a filmmaker who is a threat to his country; this is a national - and international - treasure.

Panahi is deconstructing the very idea of film. Does merely putting something on camera instantly make it a film? That's for you to judge - and, I suppose, the Iranian government.

A bold artistic statement, a guided career retrospective, a political act, and a mediation on the very nature of cinema - all at once, with neither self-pity or intellectual elitism to muddy the waters.

A snapshot of a filmmaker in exile, yes, but also a poignant portrait of a country under a repressive regime and a compelling manifesto on the perseverance of art.

Working within great restraints can result in remarkable films. Panahi proves that here and triumphs over a regime trying to silence him.

I would like to show "This Is Not a Film" to those in the United States who are in favor of a close union of church and state.

Rene Magritte, whose famous pipe painting is slyly honored in the movie's title, would be jazzed.

Utterly heartbreaking. . . a moving addition to Panahi's oeuvre . . . [Iran] could try to silence one of its greatest filmmakers, but couldn't stop him creating art.
