There's a real touch of magic in both Sorrentino's film and the stately, poised performance by Penn that anchors it.

With its overbearing eccentricity, rib-nudging irony and confusion of tones, everything in the film is either underdeveloped or overstated.

This isn't a great movie, but it is a special one.

[A] soggy, monumentally morose excuse for a movie ...

Sparked by a nutty but quite wonderful, can't-take-your-eyes-off-him performance by Sean Penn, this unpredictable film carries you along on a wave of surprise and visual beauty.

This film about a Robert Smith-like rocker hunting a Nazi war criminal, while about that, is more about everything but that. Featuring a uniquely endearing performance from Penn...[it] is one of the most unexpectedly delightful films of the year.

This Must Be the Place gives Penn a chance to vamp and camp in ways that are sometimes touching and mostly annoying.

Bizarre can be good when it's done deftly. In this case, however, it's done ponderously and sententiously.

This mashup of genres and themes doesn't entirely succeed, but it is warm, funny and ably crafted.

Penn is astonishing, creating a funny, guileless waif, infusing a faded celebrity figure with tactility and humor.

Place isn't emotionally or dramatically satisfying in the least, but it has a visual fingerprint that's worth a look, boosted by an undeniably memorable performance from Penn.

The film's numerous idiosyncrasies-virtues at the outset-ultimately suffocate it.

The film believes in maturity, but only as a freely continual process of acceptance.

"This Must Be the Place" is as much like a piece of carefully composed music as it is a movie. You've simply got to dig the mood in order to let it take you away.
