It's a biopic that somehow glosses over things whilst also simultaneously spending too long on them, too.

Biopics can be better than this; they just have to want to tell us something more than the Cliff's Notes of a life well lived.

Tolkien succeeds (in a non-entertaining way) in showing how regular people's lives can inspire great works, but it utterly fails in showing the importance and impact of the work itself, which is why we're actually drawn to the man.

Fans of Tolkien's writing probably won't discover anything new about the man from this film and the attempts to turn the Somme battlefield into a sort of fiery Middle Earth look painfully contrived. This is a minor biography of a major writer.

A very cold film for an author who is always remembered by the warmth of his prose, the overflowing imagination, and his adventurous spirit. [Full Review in Spanish]
June 14, 2019
The imagination of Tolkien the man is a commodity that Tolkien the movie can rarely lay a finger on.
June 12, 2019
