It's all a bit improbable, but Dolan -- who claimed never to have watched any Hitchcock before filming -- pulls off a Master-of-Suspense Psycho-drama, down to the scraping, disturbed violins.

Grief, lies and webs of deceit are the flesh-eating monsters. The film exudes a living poetry.... Dolan has the ability to render any banal activity ominous.

It's a tentative slow burn about the secrets we keep in the name of love, and it doesn't quite add up.

There's not enough structure to these different threads. It could work on the stage where movement and place and time are necessarily compressed, but on film it feels artificial, not fully worked out.

The kind of domestic psychodrama that may have resonated on stage but proves pretentious and hermetical here, after some initial tension.

The cross-pollination makes for some nice-looking scenes. Ultimately, though, there's a crop failure.

Aug 26, 2014A much more restrained Xavier Dolan after his pretentious previous film, and he displays an assured direction and firm control of this suspenseful thriller, even though the narrative seems to move too fast as the characters start to act in ways that are not always convincing.Carlos M Super Reviewer

Sep 07, 2013I don't believe that I have seen Xavier Dolan on the other side of the camera but this is a nice departure for him to direct and star in the film. the drama works at a nice steady pace as everything is revealed. I shade off a half star for the ending which keeps us a little bit too stranded.John B Super Reviewer
