Total Recall

Total Recall

Critics Consensus

While it boasts some impressive action sequences, Total Recall lacks the intricate plotting, wry humor, and fleshed out characters that made the original a sci-fi classic.

Movie Info

Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he's got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life - real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police - controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world - Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. -- (C) Sony

Critic Reviews for Total Recall

All Critics (233) | Top Critics (45)

  • Recalls Ridley Scott's Blade Runner and Christopher Nolan's Inception, without, sadly being quite as distinctive as either.

  • 'Total Recall' is Hollywood at its worst: pointless, witless, and so very unnecessary.

  • With a new generation of visual effects at his command, director Len Wiseman has the ability to paint on a broader canvas, but since we see this caliber of movie magic on a regular basis it's no longer an Event.

    Aug 24, 2012 | Full Review…
  • Wiseman's style is superficially grittier, reliant on desaturated colours, whip pans and lens flare. Yet the film's dystopian setting is blatantly derivative of sci-fi classics from Metropolis to Blade Runner.

  • The physical glory goes to Beckinsale and Biel who slug it out ferociously. The only problem is that in the clinches it's difficult to tell them apart. Not that it matters. Nothing does.

  • "Total Recall" is a toned-down, smoothed-out version of an amped-up, bug-eyed classic.

Audience Reviews for Total Recall

Okay, so its not the original, but what is any more? What is "original", f'cryinoutloud? Ain't it only a conceit? Taken on its own merits then, there's plenty of action and adventure here - they're in some futuristic environment - with plenty of chases and shooting and punching robot stormtroopers, the meat and potatoes this genre demands, so what else do ya want? Bad reputations aren't always justified. This delivers the goods.

May not have the charme of Schwarzenegger's original, but delivers non-stop chases and action in a pretty cool production design. Entertaining enough!

I'm a big fan of the original. Arnold's humor is my favorite part. This new one takes itself very seriously. That's not good.

The film, after a good start and middle, falls apart at the end. From the moment Bryan Cranston arrives on the scene, the deterioration begins -- and I love Cranston. But the story has no convincing finish.

Not a must see for everyone, but an almost-must see for fans of the original. It's nice to see the way they've integrated their references to the original.
