Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Critics Consensus

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is a noisy, underplotted, and overlong special effects extravaganza that lacks a human touch.

Movie Info

Two years after saving the world with the Autobots, Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) is away at college when an ancient Decepticon named "The Fallen" returns to Earth on a mission of vengeance. With the Allspark destroyed, the Autobots lose all hope of returning to their home planet of Cybertron, and begin working with an elite military known as NEST to hunt down any remaining Decepticons. But even as they fight for humanity alongside Major Lennox (Josh Duhamel) and USAF Master Sergeant Epps (Tyrese Gibson), the Autobots are acutely aware that not all humans are thrilled by their presence on planet Earth. When National Security Advisor Theodore Galloway (John Benjamin Hickey) wages a heated campaign aimed at exiling the giant robots back into space, head Autobot Optimus Prime agrees to comply with the voice of the people, while warning them of the potential consequences of leaving the planet unprotected. Meanwhile, Sam contends with an overly cocky college roommate, and attempts to remain faithful to Mikaela (Megan Fox) by fending off advances from pretty -- and persistent -- coed Alice (Isabel Lucas). Just as Sam begins adjusting to the quirks of campus life, a series of inexplicable visions leaves him convinced that the struggle between good and evil is far from over. And he's correct, too, because the Decepticons have just discovered that Sam is the one human who possesses the ability to tip the balance of power to the Autobots' advantage, and they're determined to gain the upper hand by dispensing with him once and for all. Now, as Sam and Mikaela unearth a secret about the Transformers that alters the entire course of human history, the Decepticon known as The Fallen prepares to return -- and reclaim the plant once and for all. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

All Critics (250) | Top Critics (57) | Fresh (50) | Rotten (200)

  • The movie is like the play date from hell, the kind where a crew of children reduce your home to rubble and conduct endless bouts of loud war on the living-room floor while you ponder the propriety of opening a bottle of wine.

  • I would like to think that even if I was 14, either in body or spirit, I would still find this film an impossibly, incomprehensibly overlong and cacophonous bore.

  • It adds up exactly as you'd think if you've seen a moving picture before; the motivations are simple while the laughs pound you about the head and face.

  • Much of the movie is computer-generated hash, weightless even with nonstop BOOMS and METAL GROANS and THUDS.

  • The movie rages on for a hundred and fifty minutes and then just stops, pausing for the next sequel.

  • It is as if Michael Bay was saying "You think I've blown stuff up before? Ha-ha. Wait till you see this."

Audience Reviews for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

  • Jun 21, 2016
Remember when your parents would say, "I'm not mad. I'm just disappointed." Yeah, pretty much what I'd say to Michael Bay's face... Repeatedly. This movie was terrible. Between racially stereotyped "black guy" transformers and a massive transformer with wrecking ball testicles, that is only the tip of the iceberg. Apparently the departure of Alex Kurtzman from the writing team was a downfall on this one. Character interaction was terrible, plot wasn't great. Only thing that this film had going for it was the always great special effects and sound editing.

The Transformers would've been dead meat right here, but luckily, they survived a movie that's worth millions of dollars to waste.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is a god-awful piece of sh** that's offensive in every way. The plot is extraordinarily stupid and incoherent. And, the acting is appallingly bad on all fronts; Meg Fox is the only one who manages to retain some semblance of dignity. The special effects are impressive, but they're not enough to make up for the atrociousness of the rest of the film. Unintelligible and pointless, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is definitely not "more than meets the eye."

I once saw a documentary on Transformers and someone being interviewed commented that "Michael Bay shoots more set-ups in a day than anyone else I know." This would explain why the film seems so rushed and underthought.
