Troop Zero Reviews

It's obvious the writer of the film had the ending first and awkwardly filled in the beginning. The first hour feels like three hours and what happened could have been condensed in ten minutes and still got the point across.

Troop Zero a great premise, but the results are underwhelming

It's one of those wistful, peppy flicks about scrappy young outsiders who bond to show the world their worth. Nothing wrong with that, but its story...is too broad.
January 21, 2020
While calling out its narrative as predictable would be an understatement, Troop Zero unfortunately suffers not only from superficiality but also a blissful cultural ignorance.

Hard to fault such a sweet and well-meaning approach to misfit kids finding their people, but "Troop Zero" ultimately feels a little too self-aware for its own good.

[A]n over-commitment to quirkiness can make Troop Zero feel like a song played out of tune.

A discount . . . Little Miss Sunshine -- a story barreling toward child pageantry, so satisfied with its own quirkiness that it never comes across as anything but obligatory.
January 19, 2020
Just as it earns a modicum of goodwill, it squanders it on predictable plot points and overly twee intentions.

A cast as strong as this one deserves a slightly better movie than we get here with "Troop Zero."

Cloying, very cutesy, and very exhausting.

I hated it. I did think it was slightly redeemed by Viola Davids and Allison Janney, but I think this was a ripoff of Little Miss Sunshine, [except] it wouldn't have even gotten into Sundance 10 years ago.

What we have here is a classic snobs-vs.-slobs type of standoff, an underdog tale slathered in Seventies Southern Gothic quirk.

There is a lot to admire in this movie about girls daring to be proudly, defiantly different, but it never lives up to its otherworldly promise.
January 16, 2020
This heartwarming Southern-fried dramedy has a lot going for it, but the pieces don't quite mesh.

Troop Zero is a film that's so mechanically forcing itself to be the next Little Miss Sunshine, never earned.

Janney can't do much with her garden-variety stick in the mud, though, and Davis' character is saddled with way more lifelong discontent than this otherwise flimsy role can bear.

...suffocatingly twee, designed to be a cute and warm hug of both empowerment and acceptance, and for many, it'll succeed at doing just that.
February 5, 2019
The film leans... heavily on saccharine moments that feel like a brute force way to your heart rather than earning an emotional reaction.
February 2, 2019
While this by-the-numbers crowd-pleaser goes down fairly easy as any sugary, feel-good film is designed to do, there's also a hollow emptiness at its center, rendering it to be a well-intentioned, yet ultimately forgettable experience.

Try not to overdose on the saccharine sweetness of this peculiar romp.
