Movie Info

The dark wave of 'J-horror' that started with The Ring and The Grudge quickly changed the face of Stateside chillers, and now European directors are discovering the power of clammy, damp nastiness. A grippingly confident psychological thriller about a young family who move to an old mansion in the Belgian countryside -- where 9-year-old Lisa befriends a little girl who 'lives' in the basement -- this outstanding Dutch example has already attracted remake queries from Hollywood. Real leave-a-light-on stuff.

I had trouble finding this movie last year but finally got this psychological thriller/horror directed by Elbert van Strien and co-written by him and Paulo van Vliet . My interest was awaken when I heard that Hollywood is making Two Eyes Staring - a remake set to be directed and written by Scott Derrickson and starring Charlize Theron! It is an interesting plot centred on the friendship between a young girl and the ghost of her mother's twin... at least that is what are we led to believe, but there is too many twists to even start explaining. I'll leave it to you if you decide to watch it. Acting wasn't outstanding but it was very good. Barry Atsma was the brightest point but I could not find too many faults in acting of Hadewych Minis, Isabelle Stokkel, Charlotte Arnoldy and Bart Slegers... they were just not as believable as the first mentioned. Zwart water plays a game with semblance and reality. Until the end we are finding new facts emerging but are usually negated by a family member's story. It was enough to keep the interest going, and against the background of the desolate country estate giving enough chills to expect the worst.

This movie caught my attention after reading that Charlize Theron was snapping up remake rights for this Dutch horror movie. The story is a bit usual and stereotype ghost story, but it doesn't affect this movie. It has good acting, good use of music and sound effects to create an atmosphere, fair story and good camerawork. I didn't give it a higher rating because I was expecting more and I hope improvement in the USA remake, nevertheless, it is a decent watch.
