Movie Info

Could an American MIA be struggling to find his way home? After enduring a traumatic childhood and serving two tours in Vietnam, Tom Faunce embarks upon an emotional quest to uncover the true identity of a man claiming to be an American soldier living in a remote village in Vietnam, decades after the war's end. As a veteran and Christian missionary, Tom firmly believes in the military creed, "leave no man behind," and lives by a personal oath to spend the rest of his life helping those in need. He can't turn his back on the man he meets in present-day Vietnam, despite a government's denial of the man's claim. His struggle to repatriate the man whom he believes could be a fellow soldier forms a deeply moving and haunting tale of two men whose lives intersect through the burdens of war. Unclaimed offers a compelling reason to revive awareness of the POW/MIA discussion. " C) Official Site

One can't help but think that in the hands of a shrewder filmmaker like Errol Morris, this stranger-than-fiction account would have been absolutely riveting.

The film's many dangling threads... are obscured by a crescendo of sentiment that's hard to resist.

A nakedly manipulative film, intercutting missionary Faunce's history with shots of a ludicrously glum and silent family dinner, and indulging in some treacly sad-face piano music.

Even by the final frames, you can't be sure. But you really want to believe the man claiming to be a U.S. Special Forces agent shot down in Laos during the Vietnam War is telling the truth.

Audience Reviews for Unclaimed

5/28/15 One more reason documentaries can be better than main stream movies. Is he really a MIA or not? Is the government hiding any info because of super secret MACV-SOG operations? Is John who he claims to be and do the people who recognize him like his sister and fellow soldier make the argument that he is. Lots of compelling images to support this man is truly John Henry Roberstson but still no proven DNA. This story doesn't seem to be finished.

Heartbreaking story about one POW/MIA and the shockingly, fraudulent behavior of US governmental officials who refuse to help this poor soldier who gave his life for his country or even acknowledge his existence. This man is only one of 80 or 85 thousand POW /MIA's. Hopefully this will shake up the status quo.
