Under the Influence (1986)

Movie Info

Under the Influence is a TV movie about an alcoholic, scripted by recovered alcoholic Joyce Rebeta-Burdett. Andy Griffith plays the head of an outwardly respectable New England family. Griffith drinks heavily, but the rest of the family sweeps his addiction under the rug. When Griffith lands in the hospital, he must come to grips with his illness--and the rest of the family must stop lying to each other and to themselves. Under the Influence is remarkable not only for the intelligent, unsensational handling of its subject, must also for Andy Griffith's convincing portrayal of a New Englander.

Audience Reviews for Under the Influence

I've seen a lot of movies that revolve around this topic, but this is probably the best for its time. Noah is an alcoholic father with a wife, two sons, and two daughters. His wife and older daughter have problems with prescription pills, while the younger son has an alcohol problem. The movie sort of demonstrates how addiction can be like a contagious disease and how different people handle it in different ways. Andy Griffith and Keanu Reeves especially deliver *very* good performances in this movie. It's a hard one to find these days but can be found, and hopefully will be released some time so more people can see it.
