Movie Info

John Paskievich's documentary Unspeakable takes a look at the life of people who stutter. The director, who suffers from the condition himself, presents a history of the attempts to "cure" people of the disorder, including a barbaric surgery in the 1800s in which a portion of the stutter's tongue was removed. In addition to explaining such concepts as "fluency shaping" and "stuttering modification" (a system that shares similarities in many ways to the traditional 12-step programs championed by organizations such as Alcoholics Anonymous), Paskievich interviews many other stutterers who have gained a strong amount of self-respect about the way they speak, feeling (rightly) no shame in their voice. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi
