Unstoppable certainly is nail-biting -- if only for the furious editing, swooping cameras, crash zooms and thunderous soundtrack. It's a shame that it's impossible to escape the sense of autopilot that pervades.

When the movie is careening forward like the train, not stopping for forced character development or weak social commentary, it's decent mindless excitement.

Not since The Bone Collector (where he played a quadriplegic) has Denzel Washington spent so much screen time sitting on his ass.

Unstoppable isn't a bad film per-se, but it's a by the numbers thriller that isn't remotely thrilling, and will do very well indeed to make back its remarkable $100m budget.

Tony Scott's cheap theatrics have become more cliched and predictable than scheduled stops on railway tracks.

an onslaught of visual excess and nonsensical storytelling that believes it's a credible drama, which is why even by the most forgiving standards it's still awful.

NONE of us is as dumb as ALL of us: The real life story of how we (seriously) lost control of a train!

Too many times we're stuck watching fake TV news or other people react to the action, instead of hanging with Washington and Pine.

The result is a mindless popcorn movie that speeds frantically for almost as long as the real runaway train before grinding to an anticlimactic stop.

Every shred of true story credence becomes lost in a flurry of facepalm-worthy character decisions, headache-inducing edits and stupid, preposterous action.

Basically, it's like if Thomas the Tank Engine was an angry drunk, and James and Percy had to take away his keys before he killed somebody.

An action movie likely to please only train fanatics who delight in the use of phrases such as 'trip a relay' or 'counterthrust.'

It's a missile the size of the Chrysler Building! But wait! A reliable old-hand Hollywood star and a hungry new up-and-comer will save us all! Though there will be some explosions for your entertainment! Hardly any explosions, though...

A tedious wreck. It's loud, sure, and lots of people look really anxious, but it has to be the most anti-climactic "thriller" I've seen in ages.

There may be a decent action movie in here somewhere but Unstoppable is stopped in its tracks by a horrible set up.

Viewers hoping that their hearts will be racing as fast as the film's runaway train may find themselves disappointed by how frequently the picture brakes for tedium.

An action thriller seriously devoid of action or thrills, the curiously sluggish Unstoppable is the slowest, talkiest movie you'll ever see about a runaway freight train loaded with toxic chemicals.
