What to know

critics consensus

A marriage of genuine characters, gross out gags, and pathos, Bridesmaids is a female-driven comedy that refuses to be boxed in as Kristen Wiig emerges as a real star. Read critic reviews

  • Sure, it neatly avoids a lot of the fluff found in many chick flicks and replaces it with crass shenanigans, but it adds touching moments when they're needed most, providing for a smart, less clichéd comedy.

  • [Wiig's] is the comedy of panic, paranoia, madness and self-loathing, but her trick in the new film Bridesmaids is to remain composed even as her heart is shredded to confetti.

  • Unashamedly smart... Bridesmaids has been hailed as a groundbreaking blow for American female cinema. That says a lot about the extent of Hollywood's current conservatism, but for now, Bridesmaids does nicely as a tonic corrective.

Featuring a shiny performance from Kristen Wiig, Bridesmaids is ever so entertaining and better realized than a lot of similar comedies, albeit its showcase of talented female comedians isn't on par with its ultimate generic story arc.

This is pretty much the ladies' answer to "The Hangover" series. It is nearly as effective as well. It is always refreshing to see a well cast film of female comedians. Kristen Wiig writes a great script here chock full of "bride/bridesmaid" gags like trouble at dress fittings and bridal showers. Definitely worth watching if you have ever been or want to be a bridesmaid or if your girlfriend says you have no choice.

Bridesmaids disapproves the belief held by many morons that women aren't funny. Sister to Todd Phillips' The Hangover, the most feminine of the "lad" films and features SNL regulars Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig in very well cast roles and have a brilliant back-and-forth chemistry throughout. Wiig is a particularly benevolent addition to the picture as the film's relateable and wildly likeable protagonist and Rose Byrne is also great as her rival throughout. The blend of typical crude comedy and a genuinely moving story of friendship works extremely well. One of the few comedies to actually make me laugh out loud.

Infectiously funny, sarcastic and charming, Bridesmaids is a laugh-out-loud comedy. The film sprouts its gags and potential from its cast (Wiig, Rudolph, McCarthy, Byrne & others) and it's comedic gold. 5/5
