In New York City, the family of young Dr. Max Silver (Leon Waycoff) breaks up his romance with Pat Smith (Shirley Grey) by arranging a marriage for him and sending him to Vienna. Although brokenhearted, Pat eventually dates kindly salesman Eddie Doyle (Jack Oakie). When Max returns and attempts to rekindle their romance, Pat refuses and marries Eddie instead. Knowing about Max but determined to find happiness, Eddie is content -- until Pat suffers a tragedy requiring Max's professional help.
