Movie Info

A devastated survivor of the Russian pogrom struggles in her marriage to a stern Jaffa widower while harboring a secret that threatens to destroy their union. Her family brutally killed during a violent Russian uprising against Jews, 17-year-old Fania flees to Jaffa with her infant daughter, her aging uncle, and her emotionally-damaged brother. Shortly after arriving, Fania is forced to marry Yechiel, a widowed father of two who lost his wife for malaria. Having recently purchased a parcel of land in a settlement near Safed, Yechiel and a group of other Jewish settlers struggle to eke out a living from the arid desert soil. Meanwhile, Fania realizes she will have to share a terrible secret in order to consummate their marriage.
