All so terrible, dull, and ridiculous, and I'm weary at the thought of a franchise being built from these vapid, poorly built characters.

VENOM should've been a fantastically violent exploration of id and insanity, but mostly it should've been a good time. It is none of those things. By trying to keep a foot in the kiddie camp, VENOM tries to have it all, and loses everything.

The film's major weaknesses is its screenplay. So many sequences lack credibility.

The most interesting thing about VENOM is Eddie's phone. It survives punishing battle and a prolonged dip in San Francisco Bay without ill effect. A film about its exploits, now that's a superhero flick that I could have gotten behind.

The film includes a line from a peripheral character who proclaims: 'It's worse than I thought.' Those telling words also become the only delicious piece of irony in the entire disappointing deliverance.

It's split down the middle.

Venom is the Catwoman of toxic masculinity. It's bad.

It's all about that connection between Eddie and Venom, which is very funny and it works

What sets (it) apart and keeps it on the rails is Hardy's commitment to the relatable streetwise reporter wielding a weapon that thinks for itself, that and keeping the story simple enough to enjoy it for what it is.

So much of it is amusingly off-kilter that the joy of watching it is equivalent to the pleasure of eating junk food. It's utter garbage; you won't think about it once it's gone, but it'll hit a lot of instant pleasure centers.

Manages to be both rushed and laboured, rattling through an agonising amount of setups before deciding on its split-personality buddy-comedy tone.
October 7, 2018
A chaotic, unfocused, assembly edit of a movie, that appears to have had all the vitality and humanity parasitically sucked out of it.

Venom is terrible and the worst film of Tom Hardy's varied career.
October 6, 2018
The movie doesn't really capitalize on the inherent novelty of a villain in the title role. It's where you can feel the conflict in the movie itself. Like Eddie, our hero-villain, the film resists a new shape, a new manifestation of a changing inner core.

All hail Tom Hardy. No more men in masks flying around in a motorized suit. And Hardy's Taboo is set for another season.

[A] weak B-movie with A-list talent working gamely to try to elevate the material... [but] in the end it's too much of a mixed bag of tone and erratic plotting to escape its own limitations.

It moves quickly and is fairly good-natured, but otherwise this flatly written, uninspired comic-book action movie feels more like a paycheck-driven business decision than an artistic inspiration.
October 5, 2018
Tonally uneven, mostly bumbling, and occasionally funny, sometimes on purpose. Is it good? No. Is it boring? Also no.
October 5, 2018
Sloppy mess with a lot of editing problems...wasted performances for sure.

If you're a hardcore Venom fan, you'll be more let down than if you go to this movie wanting an entertaining action ride.
