It is the documentary equivalent of walking through the after-spray of a luxury perfume, a souped up version of Through the Keyhole. Which is a shame, partly because we are living in a golden age of fashion documentaries. Go to Full Review

Michael D @MichaelX Jul 20 In the mid-1990s, I worked part-time at the Ralph Lauren store in San Francisco’s Crocker Galleria, wearing the clothes and selling the dream. Years of living abroad have cooled my ardor for that particular brand of WASPish Americana (I love Uniqlo for regular polo shirts), but this 2019 HBO documentary by Susan Lacy, who also gave us the superb "Jane Fonda in Five Acts", is a warm and revealing portrait of a decent, honest, and visionary man who built an empire from a Bronx boyhood on sheer passion and an infallible eye. It’s more hagiography than investigation, and it runs a touch long, but watching Ralph Lauren’s life unfold feels rather like wandering through one of his stores: beautiful, aspirational, and curated to an inch of its life. The unanswered question, much like Martha Stewart’s brand, is what happens to it all when he’s gone. See more Read all reviews
