This ugly routine Western is advertised as the kind of old-fashioned one they used to make.

Finally a tale in which the lovable rascal, Dean Martin, finally crosses over and is corrupted by power. A-typical casting makes this bit of the evolution of the Hollywood western worth watching.

He stops in the town of Jericho in hopes of nursing his friend back to health; however, shortly after arriving he encounters a gang leader named Alex Flood. Flood runs the city and claims to own 51% of everything in town. When Dolan sees the way Flood treats the town’s people, he decides to take matters in his own hands. “Been a widow very long?” “Not long enough to let it bother me.” Arnold Laven, director of Geronimo, Vice Squad, and The Rack, delivers Rough Night in Jericho. The storyline for this picture is pretty good. There is nothing overly original in this film; however, the character development was wonderfully delivered. The cast delivered brilliant performances and included Dean Martin, George Peppard, and Jean Simmons. I have not watched many Dean Martin films, so I decided to give this film a shot. Dean Martin was outstanding in this picture. He portrayed the villain, Alex Flood, to perfection. The villain kept the film interesting, while at times the main character, Dolan, was a bit bland. Overall, this was a worthwhile movie. “A man who starts choking a woman is looking to go to hell in a hurry. Great action with standard plot. Dino as the villain. Martin great as always with Jean Simmons and George Peppard supporting. No Oscar winner but I can think of worse ways to spend an hour and a half.
