This big budget, post-Soviet Russian fantasy epic embraces all clichés of the genre and comes up with a formulaic plot, simplistic dialogue and a terrible ending.
So in all reality I don't really understand this movie at all. I don't get it at all. What I do sort of kind of understand is on a pure aesthetic/action level. What I mean by this is that this movie sucked, and it sucked hardcore. Yet the description I am about to give warrants anyone reading this to go out, find it and watch it just so you can grasp the awesomeness. So what I got was that a dude sees his family die, escapes his oppressors and goes on some kind of a quest or something with a pet bat. Eventually through some pretty great action sequences and other parts where you are just left scratching your head. Regardless eventually there is a final showdown where eventually a giant rock owl is summoned and breaks a mountain down. The following debris is then reincarnated into a giant swirling rock face or something. Times look tough for our hero, but the gods are on his side and the clouds open up and lightning shoots from the sky which in turns blesses his sword turning it into a 150 foot lightning sword of death and proceeds to battle the rock face. Now I don't understand why any of that happened or why anyone thought it would be a good idea to make it, but damn it I'm glad they did becasue I have never been in such disbelief in seeing a movie before. All I can say is you need to watch this. Silly silly Russians.
A great Russian epic adventure. This one had the conquering hero on a quest, romance, insane battle scenes, and a satisfying ending. The only downside was the less than impressive special effects.
