Though Natalie Portman is captivating, Vox Lux bites off more topics than it can chew in attempting to dissect modern obsession with celebrity -- and violence

Even the most inane, saccharine pop song has more to say than Vox Lux.

Portman gives her all, but it's in service of a film trying to say too much, and in turn, saying almost nothing. Corbet just isn't able to make his thesis a compelling one.

Even after a second viewing of Vox Lux I still feel something is missing for me.

Raffey Cassidy is the best part of the movie, but when the film deviates its focus over to Portman (and I can't believe I'm saying this) it takes a major shift for the worse.

Vox Lux is a film without the hooks to deliver its meaning.

Vox Lox is as much of an assault as it is a ghost, lingering close to making an impact on us but never really landing.

Brady Corbet's film promises great things, and there are kernels of ambitious, fascinating ideas throughout, but they don't pay off.
November 11, 2018
Vox Lux is an eccentric, shallow story of musical narcissism that hobbles Natalie Portman with a grating caricature of pop stardom.
September 18, 2018
Vox Lux's concerns with fašade are interesting but it leaves the film itself to only scratch at the surface with weak dialogue and unconvincing performances.

October 17, 2018
Just like his previous film, The Childhood of a Leader, Corbet's technical skill as a director is undermined by his inability to subtly convey his themes, or even make his characters sound like normal human beings in their most grounded moments.

Vox Lux is no Black Swan.
September 12, 2018
Vox Lux pursues a Freudian argument without any concept of the workings of the unconscious-and perhaps even the conscious.
December 6, 2018
Director and writer Brady Corbet can't stay focused for more than five minutes, oscillating between social issues with the precision of an outraged tween on Twitter.

A jumbled provocation whose only guiding principle seems to be the belief that if you make a point loud enough, it somehow becomes more cogent.

December 8, 2018
While Brady Corbet 's sophomore effort is wildly ambitious, it's more confounding than captivating, and ultimately underwhelming.
December 7, 2018
Vox Lux is a failure, but one I can't stop thinking about.
September 16, 2018
Brady Corbet's Vox Lux offers up a concise image of a popstar in decline, but it's also an unmistakably stale one.

December 5, 2018
There is wildly brutal and graphic imagery corresponding with the rising fame of Portman's pop star character. What an insufferable allegory.
December 7, 2018
It's rare that a movie with such a promising first half completely falls apart in the second - when the Oscar winner shows up. Portman's performance is a big, big swing - and a huge miss.
